Chemical Coevolution: Host–Parasite Arms Race Runs Hot and Cold
نویسنده
چکیده
Coevolution is a major process operating across biological communities at a range of spatial scales. Rapid ecological change makes it vital that we understand how coevolution proceeds if we are to conserve genetic diversity, combat disease and predict the effects of species invasions.

What Can Phages Tell Us about Host-Pathogen Coevolution?
The outcomes of host-parasite interactions depend on the coevolutionary forces acting upon them, but because every host-parasite relation is enmeshed in a web of biotic and abiotic interactions across a heterogeneous landscape, host-parasite coevolution has proven difficult to study. Simple laboratory phage-bacteria microcosms can ameliorate this difficulty by allowing controlled, well-replicat...
متن کاملPopulation mixing promotes arms race host–parasite coevolution
The consequences of host-parasite coevolution are highly contingent on the qualitative coevolutionary dynamics: whether selection fluctuates (fluctuating selection dynamic; FSD), or is directional towards increasing infectivity/resistance (arms race dynamic; ARD). Both genetics and ecology can play an important role in determining whether coevolution follows FSD or ARD, but the ecological condi...
متن کاملSpeed of adaptation and genomic footprints of host-parasite coevolution under arms race and trench warfare dynamics.
Coevolution between hosts and their parasites is expected to follow a range of possible dynamics, the two extreme cases being called trench warfare (or Red Queen) and arms races. Long-term stable polymorphism at the host and parasite coevolving loci is characteristic of trench warfare, and is expected to promote molecular signatures of balancing selection, while the recurrent allele fixation in...
متن کاملThe dynamics of reciprocal selective sweeps of host resistance and a parasite counter-adaptation in Drosophila.
Host-parasite coevolution can result in consecutive selective sweeps of host resistance alleles and parasite counter-adaptations. To illustrate the dynamics of this important but little studied form of coevolution, we have modeled an ongoing arms race between Drosophila melanogaster and the vertically transmitted sigma virus, using parameters we estimated in the field. We integrate these result...
متن کاملParasite local adaptation in a geographic mosaic.
A central prediction of the geographic mosaic theory of coevolution is that coevolving interspecific interactions will show varying degrees of local maladaptation. According to the theory, much of this local maladaptation is driven by selection mosaics and spatially intermingled coevolutionary hot and cold spots, rather than a simple balance between gene flow and selection. Here I develop a gen...
